Topic: ASPIRE to a Love of Learning. What enables primary school students to stay curious and love learning

I have been a teacher, educational psychologist and academic. I am now a researcher, author, speaker and educational consultant. I work in all aspects of school and student wellbeing, including belonging, relationships, behaviour, social-emotional learning and school culture. I have worked internationally, including in Australia and China. Brazil and European countries, delivered numerous courses to teachers and parents, been interviewed on many podcasts and served on the Editorial Board of Educational and Child Psychology for 15 years. I am now an honorary associate professor at University College London, a Fellow of the BPS and the RSA and on several advisory boards.

Achievements

I have written around 30 books, mostly for educators, with several translations and new editions. I have also written numerous invited chapters, journal articles and magazine articles. In 2024, I was given an award for outstanding contribution by the National Association for Pastoral Care in Education and was a runner-up in the international category. I have developed the ASPIRE framework as the basis for positive relationships, healthy cultures and child development. ASPIRE is an acronym for agency, safety, positivity, inclusion, respect and equity. I have also developed 12 dimensions for social-emotional learning and the Circle Solutions pedagogy that provides a safe, strengths-based, solution-focused approach for learning to be and learning to live together.

Contribution to Current Job Profile

Next year I will have published the following: The Handbook of Wellbeing in Education: Research Transforming Practice, co-edited with Prof Ansie Kitching, published by Edward Elgar; How to Grow Great Kids: A guide to positive behaviour for parents and carers. This is in the 'Ask The Expert' Series co-produced by Routledge and the BPS; Inspiring Children's Love of Learning: Exceptional Practice in Primary Schools. This is an account of research carried out this year with Dominic Boddington, to be published by Routledge, and Creating the World We Want to Live In - how positive psychology can build a brighter future will be relaunched. Written by 7 authors, I was responsible for the chapters on childhood, education and relationships. I have been engaged as a keynote speaker for several 2026 and 2027 conferences.
